NEW AT PULP'S ART MARCH 13th

Hello readers, let's jump straight into the new releases and we kick off with a feller able to leap pretty far and high, why it's...

THE ART OF JOHN CARTER
HC 160pp Color, Black + White
Disney Editions
Reviews for the film are incredibly mixed, the cognoscenti are naturally appalled, yet some thrill and fun seekers went happily along with the ride, while some others fell off along the way.
The film is based on Edgar Rice Burroughs pulp sci-fi. fantasies, which were the prototype for Star Wars and all the other space operas, in which Confederate war veteran, John Carter, gets whisked away to Mars, where ironically he fights for a people's freedom; well they do say a change is as good as a rest.
The gravity and atmosphere of Mars means visiting earth-man John is something of a super man, this of course means the fearsome creatures and folks of the red planet are about as big a threat to him as a granny back on earth would be, all be it a really nasty granny.
Anyway, my own misgivings about the whole premise of the stories aside the books is a beauty, as with Art of Cars and Cars 2 the film is one thing, the endeavors of the artists behind the look of the film are quite another.
The creatures and environments created for the film look stunning, you get a lot of great looking digital art and 3D models but perhaps the strongest endorsement I can give the book is for the gorgeous mood setting pencils of master draftsman Ian McCaig.

If you want compelling story telling to fully captivate you why not try out the recently released Game of Thrones season 1, HBO's adaptation of the first in George R. R. Martin's fantasy saga "A Song of Fire & Ice".
A cracking story and if you get wrapped up in it why we've two art books derived from the r.p.g. set in this fascinating world.

SKINNER EVERY MAN IS MY ENEMY
HC 172pp Color, Black+ White
Ginko Press
Anyone for weird? Skinner's isn't the most refined art you'll encounter but refinement is a million miles from what he's about. Heavy Metal paganism might best describe his colorful, demented style.
Skinner knows the system doesn't work anymore for the 99% and of course he's mad as hell, so mad he'd like to unleash hell; with that not being possible he get's it all out in his art.

TARA McPHERSON: BUNNY IN THE MOON
HC 107pp Color, Black + White
Dark Horse Comics
Anyone for weird with a twist of cuteness? So here it is the third in the successful line of art books featuring the work of tattooed siren Tara McPherson.
The artist is one of those pop surrealists whose work is instantly appealing with their engaging subjects but which on closer examination have a sinister or disturbing under current, you know them, Mark Ryden, Junko Mizuno, Nicoletta Ceccoli and co..
Their art is like going to the toy box and finding two of the My Little Ponies at it!
Color works, sketches and sculptures are featured in the new collection, along with a few shots of gallery shows, family and friends.

Continuing with the theme of young artists with a singular vision, might we interest you in,

MOLLY CRABAPPLE'S WEEK IN HELL
SC 48pp Color
IDW Publishing
The first in what should be a three volume collaboration between eclectic publisher IDW and cool New York artist Molly Crabapple, in which photos recount Molly's self set Herculean task of covering a plush hotel suit in paper and then covering that paper in her intricate designs within a 5 day time limit!
She didn't stint, there are no whales blowing bubbles here, we're talking intricate!
How cool is Molly, well she counts porn stars and dominatrix among her friends, who happened to drop by and offer their support and she went to jail in Turkey for her art, Molly, we at Pulp's Art salute you!

Till next time, don't panic, keep calm, carry on and buy a book.

THE ART OF JOHN CARTER
HC 160pp Couleur, Noir et Blanc
Disney Editions

SKINNER EVERY MAN IS MY ENEMY
HC 172pp Couleur, Noir et Blanc
Ginko Press

TARA McPHERSON: BUNNY IN THE MOON
HC 107pp Couleur, Noir et Blanc
Dark Horse Comics

MOLLY CRABAPPLE'S WEEK IN HELL
SC 48pp Couleur
IDW Publishing
